Material selection

Which band saw should we choose for steel, stainless steel or aluminium?

The type of material being cut affects not only the saw blade's material and tooth pitch, but indirectly the machine's own settings (blade speed, feed force) and, in many cases, the choice of machine type itself.

Structural and alloy steel

Structural steels are among the most common industrial raw materials, and most metalworking band saws and circular saws are primarily optimized for this material group. For larger cross-section, solid steel bars, band saws are typically more advantageous due to lower material loss and continuous, less heat-intensive cutting.

Stainless steel

Cutting stainless steel involves greater heat generation and harder machining than structural steel — this requires a lower cutting speed and a blade/coolant-lubrication system optimized for heat dissipation. Since stainless raw material is typically more expensive, minimizing the kerf (i.e. lower material loss) matters especially here in terms of raw material costs.

Aluminium and light metals

Aluminium is a softer material, so it can typically be cut efficiently with a higher cutting speed and a differently pitched blade/disc than steel. MEP's range also includes circular saw models specifically optimized for aluminium (e.g. the COBRA series) — according to the manufacturer's description, these are made with HM (carbide-tipped) blades, with geometry adapted for cutting aluminium.

Why is it worth considering this already at the machine selection stage?

If the plant regularly processes several material types, it's worth checking already at machine selection whether the planned blade speed range and the blade/disc selection available for the machine cover all relevant materials — retroactively, this can limit flexibility or require an additional investment (e.g. a separate machine for a given material).
