MEP saws — technology, application and selection criteria

MEP is one of the internationally recognized manufacturers of metalworking band saws and circular saws. In this overview, we look at where the brand started, what technological solutions it offers today, and how best to navigate the model families.

A brief history of MEP

MEP was founded in 1964 by Enzo Magnani in Pergola, Italy — the name is an abbreviation of "Magnani Enzo Pergola". The first machine was a fast, abrasive circular saw (TV 300), which Magnani built in his own small workshop. Over the decades, the company grew continuously: semi-automatic machines appeared in the 70s, machines with automatic material feed in the 80s, and the band saw product family in the 90s. From the 2000s it became an international group, acquiring the Canadian company HYD-MECH in 2007, and establishing manufacturing bases in China and Brazil as well. Today, the MEP Group is one of the five divisions of Groupe Legris Industries, with 4 production plants (Italy, Canada, USA, China), 280 employees, exports to 65 countries, around 4,000 machines produced per year, and 75 different models.

Model families in brief

  • SHARK — the backbone of the band saw range, available in manual, semi-automatic and automatic (some equipped with the KONNECT IoT platform) versions.
  • THOR — larger cross-section, semi-automatic band saws.
  • PH — compact, manual band saws for smaller tasks.
  • TIGER, COBRA, FALCON — circular saw model families in manual, semi-automatic and automatic (some CNC) versions.
  • VELOCEX — high-speed automatic circular saws, with up to twice the performance of a comparable band saw according to the manufacturer.

KONNECT — industrial IoT platform

Some of MEP's automatic models (e.g. SHARK 460 KONNECT, SHARK 662 H KONNECT, SHARK 332 RC KONNECT) are available with a Linux-based industrial computer and native IIoT technology: real-time machine monitoring, Industry 4.0-compatible connectivity, remote software updates and remote technical support — without hardware replacement or on-site visits.

Quality management and certifications

MEP holds ISO 9001:2015 (quality management), ISO 14001:2015 (environmental management) and ISO 45001:2018 (occupational health and safety) certifications, and received an EcoVadis Gold rating for its sustainability performance in 2024.
